Shen Yu was betrothed to the Duke of Zhenguo by the late emperor, but soon after, the general's family was massacred. During childbirth, the maid Wei Shu, out of jealousy, switched the baby. Shen Yu discovered this but did not speak out, instead going to Tianshan to rescue her daughter. Afterwards, she groomed Yan Zhaozhao to become the Crown Princess, while Wei Shu abused her own daughter. On her return visit home, the truth was revealed, but Shen Yu donned armor and led her former troops to confront the Duke of Zhenguo.
