Raised as a lonely farm girl in Oregon, Wren has endured isolation her whole life, while her alcoholic adoptive father hides an 18-year secret from her. During a violent thunderstorm, eerie blue underworld fire bursts from her palms, and an old scar on her wrist blooms into a royal vine-and-moon crest, awakening her Blue Tier life-and-death power. Townsfolk brand her a witch, with only her loyal friend Della standing by her side. Kael, an underworld envoy, tracks her matching royal blood, while the villain Morwenna sends shadow assassins to kill her. Cornered, Wren unlocks the Green Tier, gaining the ability to hear the voices of the dead. Guided by wandering spirits, she crosses into the Underworld’s Ash City. Nyx, a fake princess, tampered with royal records to steal her birthright. Charon the ferryman presents a black stone matching Wren’s infant swaddling cloth as irrefutable proof. Wren’s power shifts to blazing Red Tier, borrowing the ancient laws of the Underworld to stand before Lord Hades. Refusing to wait for others to validate her, she proclaims herself the rightful Crown of the Underworld, kicking off a bloody bloodline trial spanning the mortal and underworld realms.
