On the outskirts of New Orleans, Louisiana, lies a wetland known to locals as White Marsh. Legend has it that an ancient race of snake-people lives there—women who can take human form and possess the abilities to heal wounds, control water, and sense lies.
The protagonist, Selena Vale, is the last surviving descendant of the White Snake lineage. Twenty years ago, when she was still in her serpent form, she was rescued by a lost little boy. The boy freed her from a snake hunter’s trap and used his own jacket to shield her as he led her into the wetlands.
Twenty years later, Selena has taken human form and come to New Orleans, where she works as a mysterious female doctor at a herbal clinic. On the surface, she appears aloof yet gentle, but in reality, she has never truly belonged to the human world. She came to the city with only one purpose: to find the boy who saved her all those years ago and repay his kindness.
That boy has now grown up to become Evan Cole, an emergency room doctor.
