Emily, an office worker, says she is heading back to her hometown Asheville. Her colleagues tell her the entire town was wiped out by a chemical disaster twenty-five years ago. She drives into the fog-shrouded town, only to find all its residents are looping consciousness replicas, and the man she regards as her father is actually an experiment administrator. The truth unfolds that she is the sole test subject, and the whole town is a consciousness simulation. In the end, she walks out of the illusion and faces reality head-on.
