Sam, the mine foreman, ignored Jack's warnings and insisted on mining the sulfur-gold vein where a colony of snakes dwelt. He ordered mass slaughter of the snakes and had them cooked for food, invoking the vengeance of the snake spirits. A serpent plague broke out, and workers in the mine were repeatedly attacked and killed by snakes. Greedy for wealth, Sam stubbornly planned to detonate explosives inside the mine tunnel and even coerced the miners at gunpoint. Hordes of snakes surrounded the camp. Abandoning everyone to save himself, Sam fled, only to be killed by a giant python. Jack led a small group of co-workers to narrowly escape through a wall of fire. Afterwards, the mine was permanently sealed by authorities, and strange serpent activity still lurks deep in the mountains.
